  • Unpack and relax at your hotel

Accommodation: Jetwing Vil Uyana. If your budget can stretch to it this hotel is extraordinarily good. There many good hotels around this region, so pick one and use it as a base to explore the Golden Triangle

  • It is recommended that you take a picnic lunch with you (and lots of water) - there is a fair amount of walking and in the heat of the day you need to keep hydrated.
  • Late afternoon head to the stunning cave temples in Dambulla. There is a bit of a climb to the top, but it is well worth it.

The Lotus Pond - The ancient city of Polonnaruwa:

  • Sri Lanka's second ever capital
  • World Heritage Site
  • Spans over 3000 square km

Day 5 - Sigiriya to Peradeniya to Ella

Day itinerary:

  • To get the train from Peradeniya (a suburb of Kandi) to Ella takes a bit of pre-planning. To make sure you get a seat in the best carriage to take in the view you will need to book ahead via the Exporail site -http://www.exporail.lk.
  • The Peradeniya station is fairly remote so you will need to take a taxi there.
  • Once aboard, enjoying the stunning scenery as you wind you way up into the hills. The journey takes approx 6.5 hours

Day 6 - Ella

Day itinerary:

  • Take a walk around town in the morning.
  • In the afternoon take a hike to little Adams Peak. There will be an element of clambering to do but the views are definitely worth it.

Directions for Adam Peak hike:

  • Go down the Passara Road until you get to the plant shop on your right, just past the 1km post.
  • Follow the track to the left of the garden shop, Little Adam’s Peak is the biggest hill on your right and is clearly signposted.

  • Take the second path that turns off to your right and follow it to the top of the hill. Part of this path passes through a tea estate. The approx 4.5 km round trip takes about 45 minutes each way.

Day 8 - Yala, Bundala

Day itinerary:

  • A lot of people ignore Bundala in favour of the leopard safari in Yala National park. However, if you have got the time a trip around Bundala is well worth it.
  • Bundulla has a wide variety of bird life - look out for India Pitta (Sri Lanka's national bird), Hoopoes, Peacocks, Kites. Take binoculars and a camera with a good zoom. We borrowed both from our hotel (if that helps!)
  • In the afternoon, take a jeep into Yala and cross your fingers for a leopard sighting. If a ranger spots one they let everyone else know and there is usually a mad rush to get a glimpse.
